In
London Now
In
London now, we witness much the same,
Alas, because
some poor black bloke was slain?
Again, because policemen bear no blame?
Oh, across England
is there one refrain?
Just, months ago we watched the Royals
wed.
Brits rose above race differences and class.
Now in the street, its hooligans
they dread
Gone is that sweet mirage; lo, the morass!
London, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool...
At night, we see how disaffected rule.
They smash, they loot - set cars and stores alight,
Just
mindless vandals looking for a fight.
At dawn, broom-wielding
Wombles clean the mess,
But who will sweep the embers of distress.
